Book Review:Bad-Ass Faeries 3:In All Their Glory

Posted in Book Reviews, Books, Reviews, Uncategorized on May 16, 2010 by teamjalice1863

It is finally here! The third installment of the Bad-Ass Faeries series! I got the opportunity to read this book pretty quickly, and I am glad I did.

This collection of stories is based around military faeries, and war. Each story highlights the trials and tribulations of the fae.

Fans of the series will be delighted to see the works of their favorite authors in a new way. Authors such as Trisha Wooldridge, Christy Tohara, DC Wilson, Bernie Mojzes, Danielle Ackley-McPhail, and others return to tell all-new stories.

Like with the previous two anthologies, each and ever tale presents the reader with a new set of interesting cares to care for, or hate (or love to hate!) If you read from beginning to end, you will want to know what adventures you will become a part of next!

There are a couple of newcomers as well. They slip into the ranks with the others perfectly. These talented authors write passionate stories with adventures, and heartbreak. It keeps the pages turning.

This anthology will delight those who love the fae, and those looking something out of their normal expectations. It leaves the readers hungry for more, and anticipating what the Bad-Ass series will come up with next!!

Book Review: White Cat by Holly Black

Posted in Book Reviews, Reviews, Uncategorized on May 12, 2010 by teamjalice1863

White Cat was an amazing departure from Faeries for Mrs. Holly Black. I have only been reading her for a while, but I devour every single book of hers that I pick up.

The most interesting thing for me, from a writer’s perspective, is that she wrote this book from a point of view that I have personally never seen in mainstream novels. She handled the writing beautifully.

The characters, situation, and locations involved are interesting .Cassel Sharpe is going to give Edward Cullen and Jace Wayland a run for their money. His wit, and how he sees the world is clearly defined.

Mrs. Black’s new series is set to be just as addictive, fun, and full of adventure as her other works.

Can’t wait to read more of the Curse Workers’ series. It’s going to be absolutely incredible. Here’s to a great new adventure by one of the mistresses of Urban Fantasy.

Book Review: The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening

Posted in American Idol, Book Reviews, Reviews on May 5, 2010 by teamjalice1863

Let me start by saying: I am so glad I finally gave this series a shot. I have not been disappointed! The Vampire Diaries might seem like it’s a rip off of Twilight Saga, but the truth is that this series was released in 1991!! Many, many years before Twilight was even thought of! So I will stop all prejudgments there.

The characters in this book series are very interesting. Elena, who was at first portrayed as shallow, really begins to grow on you. Stefan, Bonnie, Meredith, and Caroline are all great supporting roles.

To be honest with you, the character that stood out the most is the character you see the least until the end! Damon Salvatore, Stefan’s sinister, manipulative older brother.

The book climaxes, then ends very suddenly, forcing the reader to think twice about not continuing on to the second book, The Struggle. Which, I believe, was the point. It was very well done. If I didn’t have another book I wanted to read immediately, the Salvatore brothers would have me for another 200 + pages.

I might add: If you’re like me, and picked up the books because of the CW TV series, you are going to be disappointed if you go in believing that the books are going to be exactly like the series. Not true at all. I had a bit of a hard time getting through the first few chapters because of that, and I KNEW they were different. I just thought I’d add that as an extra precaution to those looking for more Salvatore brothers to satisfy them until Season 2 airs!

Stephenie Meyer Fans Can Rejoice!

Posted in Uncategorized on March 30, 2010 by teamjalice1863

Finally, after a long wait, we have something else to look forward to! Just before the film version of Twilight Saga:Eclipse is released, Twilight Fans can now read a side novella. This story is called The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner.

According to Stephenie Meyer’s official website, the story was meant to be a part of the Twilight Saga:The Official Guide. However, it grew too long, so her editor suggested that she release it as a stand alone novel.

I think her fans will be very happy with that decision, as many of them are chomping at the bit to grasp more of both her writing, and the Twilight world.

In addition to a June 5, 2010 release to bookstores, this novella will be available on it’s own site starting June 7, 2010 till July 5th for free. The site is http://www.breetanner.com.

Some are probably thinking that the book is going to come out as a way to promote the Eclipse movie. Do you know what I say to that? No way! Twilight has gotten so that it promotes itself! Trust me, if it says anything Twilight Saga, it IS going to sell.

For me, as someone who has found Stephenie Meyer to be an incredible inspiration for her deterimination to get published, and who has proven that a great story will sell, I am relieved that she has not disappeared from publication all together. And for the record? I would buy anything she writes. For me, it is not just Twilight Saga. It is everything Stephenie.

A press release from Little,Brown (Stephenie Meyer’s publisher) also talks about when we might hear more about the Twilight Saga Official Guide. This is good news for anyone who had thought the guide was never to be released!!

Book Review: Cat the Vamp

Posted in Book Reviews, Books, Reviews on March 20, 2010 by teamjalice1863

I just finished the book, Cat the Vamp by Christine Martine. This book was very unique, and presented a lot of firsts for me.

I finally got a chance to see what 3rd person Onipresent was. I hadn’t read a book in that point of view before. Martine does it in a way that is not as confusing as I imagined it to be.

I like the characters, and the relationships between all of them. Morgan and Cat are a hot pair! I think Amber and Zach make a great complimentary pair.

The vampire verse that Martine has created makes for an interesting twist. Instead of them being undead, they merely need the blood for extra life energy. That is a great twist, and one that I have not seen. I like how she kept them human while having this actual quirk.

She also presents the issue of addiction and overdose in a way that is intense, and not without consequence. Cat and Morgan’s descent into addiction is handled subtly, and with very little foreshadowing. The reader can FEEL it coming, but they are not told outright this is what is happening.

The only bad thing about this book is that you are left with wanting more. Which, in a way, is technically not a bad thing. It means that Martine has created a world that you want to be a part of over and over again. I would love to see her continue this story in another book or two.

Movie Review: Alice in Wonderland

Posted in Movie Reviews, Reviews on March 15, 2010 by teamjalice1863

I do not know why this movie is considered a flop. The movie has only been out for two weeks, and from what I understand, has not even been released world wide yet. That’s when we should worry! (Sorry, pent up frustration at the board at http://www.imdb.com. They are so horrible sometimes. Really need to stop going there.)

Anyway! Yes, so I finally got to see this, and I am really glad. The movie had more good points than bad for me. One of the best parts is the wide casting variety. The best cast came together for this one. But I have no right to expect anything less from Tim Burton, who has continuously surprised me, no matter how many of his movies I have seen.

It has a sort of Chronicles of Narnia feel at some points, but I don’t believe this is a bad thing. I actually really enjoy those kinds of feelings. Johnny Depp, per usual, gave an outstanding performance as the Mad Hatter. He made him a lot different from how I’ve always seen him, and so now he is easily my favorite character in the fandom. (WEll, second. Still love my Cheshire cat. Always have. Probably always will. 🙂 ) onh

Helena Bonham Carter was just brilliant as the Red Queen. I am a little offended by someone who thought the Red Queen was CGI. Clearly not! It was the make up job. That could have been done maybe a LITTLE better, but if it had been toned down, I don’t think it would have been nearly as effective as it was, so….I think she was supposed to look overkill. That was the Red Queen. She was always overkill in the books, from my understanding. So they were right on the money.

Now the surprise of the film was Alan Rickman. I spent a good portion of the film every time the caterpillar spoke saying, “why does he sound like Snape?!” He was the only one I didn’t know was in the movie, so I was kind of shocked to see his name in the credits. This didn’t come off to me as something he would be willing to do. He usually likes darker roles. But he definitely pulled it off.

Anne Hathaway makes a believeable if not odd White Queen. I rather liked her in this role. It was different for her from other things she’s done. Not quite so girly girl, if you know what I mean. This is coming from a big Anne Hathaway fan. (I’ve loved her since the Princes Diaries, and I have almost seen ever movie of hers since!)

The effects in this movie were great. I know alot of people felt they were lacking, but maybe it’s because it was a bit cartoony for them. However, this is Wonderland we’re talking about it. It’s all about being wacky and just having fun, and I believe they have pulled that off in a stunning matter. Maybe it’s not ‘Avatar’ quality, but for what they did, it was great. I am certain the effects would have been even more spectacular in 3D. I am hoping that we will see this movie in 3D on DVD when it comes out. However, we might as well have seen them in 3D without the glasses, because the effects were done so that it really was almost a 3D experience without the 3D.

Musically speaking, this movie was scored well. How could it not be? Danny Elfman, one of my three favorite composers did this movie. He has a knack for scoring a movie just right. He can never disappoint me with anything. (I would actually like to see him score one of the Twilight movies, but I’m guessing Summit doesn’t have the money to fund him. ;__;)

My only possible nitpick is that this movie seems to have borrowed from a book called The Looking Glass Wars. It is just a suspicion, mind you. I have not read the book, but I know enough about it to catch some similarities. It may actually have been unintentional, but I hope the author of LGW doesn’t see it, and decide to sue. Other than that, I am ready to give this film an 8 out of 10 for being very entertaining, well worth the money and wait to see it.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians:The Lightning Thief (The Movie)

Posted in Movie Reviews, Reviews on February 22, 2010 by teamjalice1863

Okay, so I actually saw this movie on Saturday, but I had to finish the book before I could write a proper review.

For me, the movie was more action packed. There were a few scenes that I thought worked better in the movie than in the book, but that’s just opinion.

I don’t have any real nitpicks as far as book to movie goes. I am a little bit disappointed with how the end of the movie went in comparison to the book. Luke was more of a bad guy in the movie than he was in the book at the end. And I think they did that more so there would be action.

Instead of his fight with Ares, there was Quidditch like flight scene with Luke. Not that that wasn’t cool or anything. I loved it a lot. But I would have loved to have seen the facial expressions of the mortals when Ares and Percy.

Something else that was lacking, and I’m not sure who else to blame for this but the script writers, is the lack of bond between Percy and Annabeth. I know it seems silly, but in the book their bond grew gradually. It happens a bit too fast in the movie. And Grover… you don’t really get a sense of the comraderie between the three of them as a unit.

Again, as I have stated many many times, it is really hard to get everything into a 2 and half hour movie. Especially when the book is about 300 some pages.

I am very impressed with what have done with the movie as a whole. As a book adaptation, it deviated a little too much. As a movie of it’s own, it was excellent. I want to see the next one, if we get one.

Book Review: Witch and Wizard by James Patterson

Posted in Book Reviews, Books, Reviews on February 9, 2010 by teamjalice1863

Just as I expected, I LOVED this book. However, I actually liked it BETTER than Harry Potter.

While the storyline has some similar lines to Harry Potter, they are very slight. the story is completely original.

It brings back the Witch Trials that took place long ago, and put them in the modern times.

The chapter lengths made this a quick read for someone with a busy schedule, but it kept the pages turning.

The ending left a lot to be desired, but it is an obvious lead in to the next book which is going to be just as successful, I am sure.

If you like Harry Potter, you will like this book It will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Be prepared to be up late at night, turning pages.

This is what reading is all about! A Plus from this avid reader.

Book Review: Wicked Lovely

Posted in Book Reviews, Books, Reviews on February 6, 2010 by teamjalice1863

It took me a long time to read this book. Mostly because I forgot about it for a bit. Now that I’ve finished it, I doubt it will take me that long for the second book.

The characters are thrown into a plot that is more complicated than just good and evil. Every one of them has something to lose by another’s choice.

There are not many books out there like this, and I can only hope that Marr’s other five books in the series (some of which are not released yet), will prove to be just as good.

I really like Seth, and Keenan’s pretty okay. I can’t really despise him. He needed to be manipulative, but at the same time, he DID come to understand Aislinn’s needs.

Ash was a very determined, strong, female lead. I really enjoyed reading about journey, and how she learned to accept things that were inevitable

City Faeries Chapter 3 Part 2

Posted in City Faeries Series, Original Fiction on February 5, 2010 by teamjalice1863

Davenport wasn’t happy. Out of the blue, both of his children had taken off. His suspicions rose upon investigating his eldest daughter’s room. Tracie had what could only be described as a miniature tub full of green tea. Faeries. He understood then. His children were running away to protect them. That put him a bad situation.

He sat at the dining room table across from two of the neighborhood exterminators, trying to keep a straight face as he spoke of his family’s involvement with the Fae world. “My wife and I were working as scientists for the Fae. We were trying to find a cure to metal poisoning. Or at least some kind of relief from it.”

The taller of the two men whose name was Jack, scribbled something on his pad. He wrote with deliberance. His hair was some of the whitest Davenport had ever seen. “How long have you been working for this cause?” He pointed to the vest that had “watch guard” printed neatly on a tag. “It hasn’t been a long time, has it?”

“No, of course not.” Davenport felt sweat forming on his brow. These men were the proper exterminators. They were not the kind that killed faeries just to kill them. They had to have a reason. They were not a part of “the Cause”, as they put it. They were grilling him too hard. “I lost my job a few months ago. My family was desperate.”

“The Faerieology department did shut down.” The second man, Manuel, nodded in agreement, his thick auburn curls bobbing up and down. “Is your wife working elsewhere now as well?”

“She is teaching at a preschool.. The Faerie Sciences was her college minor.” Davenport sighed, passing a hand over his eyes. “Look, between the three of us, I don’t really enjoy working where I am right now. If I had any other choice, I would do something different.”

“Then perhaps you should.” Jack held out a folder. “We are a small organized group that are looking for scinetists of Faerieology. We want to study these fascinating creatures. We do not believe they are the ones who killed those children. Faeries are known to be tricksters, but very few of them have ever intentionally hurt a child. That crap about faerie kidnappings is just story.”

Davenport flipped through some of the handouts. They were, as Jack pointed out, well-organized. They had statistics on every type of faerie imaginable, and they even had a small article about the faery’s role in child development.

One flier in particular caught his attention. It dealt with the harmful effects of denying a child the right to their faery companion. He scanned it, thinking of his youngest, Tawny. He was fairly certain watching the exterminators come and wipe their house clean of faeries had traumatized her. She slept a lot in Tracie’s room after that.

The family was never sure if Tawny’s own faery had been killed during that raid. Tawny always claimed he had, but he felt that Benny must have left on his own accord to escape death. That seemed more likely for Benny’s personality. He could never convince Tawny of that. She hated him most for his current job.

“You don’t have to live with your children hating you. You could join us.”

“I don’t have the money to join a volunteer effort.” The man sighed then. “May I keep this? Just in case?”

“It’s yours.” The two men stood up. Davenport shook each of their hands. Jack smiled easily at him. “If you change your mind, feel free to call us. The number is on every flier in that packet.”

“Thanks, I will be sure to do that.” First, I need to see if I can find my children. They can’t possibly believe they’re going to be able to smuggle faeries everywhere without being caught. Their punishments would be severe. He shuddred, closing his eyes. “Tell me something. Does this program also protect the family from persecution? I don’t want to see my daughters hurt. They seem to have… taken on more than they can chew on their own.”

“We’d do everything we could to protect them. It makes all of us feel good to hear that not all children have turned away from them. Are your children here now? We could talk to them right now.”

Davenport was hesitant to answer. “They are out right now. I will give them your message. My daughter Tracie would love you guys.” He wasn’t exaggerating. Tracie had been a faerie activist from the beginning. He wished he had listened to her now. They hadn’t been on good speaking terms for months. “Thank you for your time, and I’m sorry I can’t give you an answer right now.”

“It’s not a problem. Many of us were skeptics once. You’ll come around, I’m sure.” Jack smiled confidently. “Just remember to call if you need anything.” He and Manuel showed themselves out of the house.

Davenport sighed, slumping his chair. Now he had to be the one to go and track his children down before they got themselves, and their faery refugees hurt.

***
Tracie watched Marlon in awe. The faery boy had been sitting motionless in her sister’s lap for almost twenty minutes. She assumed he was working some kind of magic. The faery energy was swirling around her like nothing she had felt before. It was intoxicating. Just as a light headed feeling slammed into her, she heard Felix’s steadying voice.

“Relax. Take a deep breath. Most of our energies are heightened now that we are away from the city area. We’ll be able to fend for ourselves just a bit better.” He surprised her with his gentle voice. Felix hadn’t come off to her as someone who was capable of being nice to anyone but family.

Tracie let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. “Felix… what’s he’s doing? And how did he get Tawny to sit so still? I’ve never seen her so motionless in my life.” The faery at her side chuckled slightly. She looked over. “What?”

“Marlon has bonded with her. When you get a friendship that strong, you learn to trust each other. She requested permission to hold him while he worked so he wouldn’t have to be on the ground. He accepted, but he gave her very specific instructions. Not sure exactly what he said, but it’s working.”

“He didn’t enchant her, did he?” Suddenly Tracie was alarmed. While it was okay for a faery that “belonged” to you to cast minor spells and magics over you just for fun, it was another matter all together for a strange one to do so.

“Marlon? Nah. He isn’t for playing with mortals like that. He has a very strict ethics code, unlike most of our kind.” Felix grinned impishly then. “I could prove it if you like.”

“No thanks.” Tracie stood up then. The forest was darkening as the early hours of evening were becoming apparent. “It’s going to be pretty cold by the time the sun sets, Felix.”

“Not a problem.” Felix said nothing more, as he went to get the two youngest party members out of the small creek where they were playing. When he came back, Terry and Gracie were giggling happily at his side. “We’ll have plenty of warmth with all of us around. Even the little ones can help us.”

“We definitely will!” Terry grinned, then quieted, seeing his brother’s state. “He’s been like that for a long while, Felix. Is it really okay?”

“Your brother knows what he is doing. Why don’t you help me gather some dry sticks, and stones. We’re going to need them.”

(This chapter will be the last chapter I make public. If you want to read more after Part 3, you will need to contact me out of this blog. Thanks everyone for reading this far.)
